In this Fat Forward Books exclusive interview, Samantha Puc talks with author Amy Spalding about her latest adult sapphic romance, On Her Terms! The pair discuss the worldbuilding in Spalding's Out in Hollywood series, how publishing has improved its approach to fat stories since Spalding began writing body-diverse characters, and the genuine cultural importance of brunch, among other topics.

Amy Spalding is the author of several novels, including the bestselling For Her Consideration, We Used to Be Friends, and The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles), which was named a best book of 2018 by NPR, The Boston Globe, Kirkus Reviews, and more. She is a recipient of the 2023 Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award for the authentic, funny, and diverse representation of the LGBTQ+ community in her books.

Amy grew up in St. Louis and now lives in Los Angeles. She has a B.A. in Advertising & Marketing Communications from Webster University and an M.A. in Media Studies from The New School. Amy studied longform improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

Samantha Puc (she/they) is a fat, disabled, lesbian writer and editor whose work focuses primarily on LGBTQ+ and fat representation in pop culture. They are an Eisner Award-winning journalist and Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic with bylines at The Beat, Publishers Weekly, Yes! Magazine, Polygon, and elsewhere. Samantha is the founder of Fat Forward Books, Community Voices Blog Editor at NAAFA, and a contributor to the award-winning Fat and Queer: An Anthology of Queer and Trans Bodies and Lives. They graduated in 2025 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative nonfiction from The New School. When Samantha is not working or writing, she loves spending time with her cats, reading, and perfecting her grilled cheese recipe.
